The Dorothy Baker Memorial Scholarship Fund
(DBMF) for Higher Education

DEFINITION:
The Dorothy Baker Memorial Scholarship Fund for Higher Education provides financial assistance
to graduates in local area high schools to pursue a college education within the New York City
metropolitan area.

CRITERIA:
Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded annually. Scholarships must be used for school tuition,
student fees, and books. Scholarship payments will be made directly to the institution.
Each applicant will be evaluated in five areas:
• Academic performance, including GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Relevant work experience to their respective area of study
• Financial need
• Community/school involvement
• Desire to attend a fully accredited college/university in the New York City area

HOW TO APPLY:
Completed scholarship applications from graduating high school seniors must be received by mail,
fax or email. All applications must be submitted by January 30th each year. In addition to the
application, students will be required to submit a transcript of grades and a letter of
recommendation.

LABOR OF LOVE EDUCATION COMMITTEE’S ROLE:
The Labor of Love Association, Inc. Education Committee will review all applications and
recommend a scholarship recipient from each of the participating schools. These
recommendations will be voted on at the March Board Meetings annually.
The scholarship program will be marketed through the participating high school’s guidance
counseling/career drive division. Literature and printed applications will be sent by Labor of Love
Association to the schools. Applications can also be downloaded electronically from the Labor of
Love Association website. (www.laborofloveassoc.org )

FOLLOW-UP:
The goal is to begin the application process in September of the school calendar
year. Deadline for applications will be January 31st of the school calendar year.  The award winners will be announced by March 31st of the school calendar year.

A representative of Labor of Love Association will formally present the scholarships to the recipients at their graduation ceremonies.

Matching Gifts
The Labor of Love Association, Inc. accepts matching gifts from all companies that join with their employees to support charitable organizations through monetary donations.

As a donor, when you make a gift to Labor of Love, please check with your company's Human Resources department to see whether a matching gifts program is offered.  If offered, please obtain a form from your company to complete and send to Labor of Love for verification of your donation so that your company will match your gift.  Some companies double, even triple their employee's gifts to charitable foundations!
